Intro WARNING: This walkthrough contains some spoilers NOTE: If this whole thing looks oddly formatted, try maximizing it in your browser or notepad Having made a walkthrough for the original NES version of this game, I thought "why not change a few things and make a Crystalis GBC walkthrough out of it as well." And so I did; the GBC version of this game is indeed a rerelease of the classic NES game, but I made this walkthrough while playing the GBC version, as there are a few significant differences you'll encounter while playing the game. Below I've included my introduction for the NES version of the FAQ as I believe it demonstrates my motive in making a walkthrough for Crystalis, both the NES and GBC versions of this excellent game. Crystalis was released by SNK for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990. The game is of the adventure/RPG genre, and has a similar gameplay to Zelda 1. Crystalis was re-released for Game Boy Color in June, 2000, and included an updated story, new music, and a few other new gameplay elements. This Walkthrough is based solely on the NES version, but could easily be applied to the GBC version as well. I attempted to make this walkthrough as simple as possible, and you will probably notice its brevity in relation to other FAQs and walkthroughs. In each section I created an outline that tells you all encessary steps, the more detailed bullets contain how to achieve these objectives. The maps, however, provide basically all necessary instruction for the game, as dungeon exploring is the primary objective of the game. Furthermore, I want to provide as much freedom to the gamer in regards to purchasing, leveling up, etc., although leveling up is often necessary to defeat certain bosses and enemies. My reason for making this FAQ/Walkthrough/etc.: I have had a very large and fairly popular Crystalis web site for almost 5 years now, and I had previously posted others' FAQs because of convenience and practical reasons, but I recently decided, although the present FAQs are more than adequate, to write a very simple walkthrough: one that would concisely contain all necessary info and a good, but not too wordy, walkthrough. Also I felt sorta lazy not making my own seeing as many of my web site visitors view me as an authority on the subject. Furthermore, this is my first Gamefaq's faq; I did write a Faxanadu faq as well but that was for an RPGClassics shrine and was not easily transferable to text. Although much of the information is probably repeated in other FAQ's, I researched it all myself unless noted otherwise (biggest exception minimum levels for bosses and such, which I obtained from a very cool Nintendo Power two-issue walkthrough on Crystalis... I still remember one of the parts was the issue with Ken Griffey Jr. on the cover)). If you find anything missing, incorrect, or something that should be added, please email me at tbrennan527@yahoo.com. =============================Section II. Walkthrough ====================Area 1: Wind Valley Outline: I. Get Sword of Wind and $100 in town II. Visit Zebu in cave to the NW III. Find Alarm Flute in cave to the NE IV. Use Alarm Flute to wake Miller & obtain Windmill Key V. Start Windmill, obtain Refresh VI. Get Ball of Wind & defeat Vampire in Sealed Cave -After awakening from the cave, go to the house in the NE area of town of receive $100 -Go to the elder, Tamalic, in the NW building to receive the Sword of Wind and some info -Go to the item and armor shop; there is nothing vital to buy. I recommend not bothering with shield/armor until the next town -MAKE SURE ALL WEAPONS/ARMOR ARE EQUIPPED -Visit Zebu, a wise man, in the Eastern cave for some information; he will tell you your job is to fix the Windmill -Go to the cave in the Northeast and find the Alarm Flute; go East to the fork, then head south to the stairs. Then head to the NE corner to find the Alarm Flute. Leave cave and head north along the mountains, and north again after approaching the bridge -Enter this small cave and head north to find the sleeping Miller. Select the Alarm Flute from the item screen and use it to wake him and obtain the Windmill Key -Head SE out of the cave and go use the Windmill Key in the windmill to start -Visit Zebu as he tells you to and receive Refresh magic from him -Enter the Sealed Cave just west of the Windmill. Before doing so you may want to buy an Antidote at Leaf; the small Red Blobs can poison you on contact so avoid them as best as possible -Using the Map, get all the treasures, especially the Ball of Wind, which is necessary to break the Rock Walls and progress through the cave -The Vampire stands in the way of the cave exit, so in order to defeat him, I recommend simple jabs when he is on the screen, and projectile shots when you can't get close to him. He should die fairly easily, leaving the Rabbit Boots; be sure to maintain HP with Refresh, or Medical Herbs if necessary, and try to avoid his bats. He leaves 25 exp. One way to get a quick clean shot on the Vampire is to charge your sword to level 2 before approaching him and and release the sword button when he starts talking; as soon as the dialogue disappears, you'll hit him with your level 2 shot. Don't worry too much about the bats flying around. Sealed Cave Map -A Note about Maps: corresponding stairs are indicated by the same letter, entrance is abbreviated "ent," the exit is also labeled. Treasure chests are abbreviated "Tr" with the item inside, located nearby. The types of wall barriers are abbreviated as follows: rock = "Rk," ice = "Ic," and iron = "Ir;" wall is abbreviated "Wl." Water Bridges are abbreviated "WB" __ |F | ______________________|__|_ __ | | |Tr| Antidote |______________ _________| | | |E | | | | | |__| |__| | | |Rk| |__| _______________ |Wl| |C | | | |__| |__| | ____________| | | | | |A | | | | | |__| | | __ | | | | |C | | | __ _______________| |________________|__|__________ |__| |A | | | _____|Br|_________|__| |_________________________________________________| | |id| | |B | |D | | __|ge|____________| |__| |__| | | |__| __ | | | | __ __ Med. |Tr| Warp Boots | | | | |B | |E | Herb |__| | | | |_______________|__| |__|_______ __ |Rk| | | | | | Tr | | | |Wl| | | |_____________________| |__________| | | |__| | | _______| |____| | |___| |D | | |ent| |__|____ ____ | | | |G | | | | | _____| |______ | | | | | | | | | | | Witch | _______| | | | | | | | |Tr| Ball of Wind |_____ ______| __________ |__________| |__| | | | | | | |_______ | _______| | |G | | | | | |__| |__| |__________| |Rk| |F | |Wl| |__| |__| | | | | |exit| ====================Area 2: Cordel Plains Outline: I. Go to Brynmaer II. Find Onyx Statue, trade for Gas Mask III. Go to Poisonous Swamp, find town of Oak IV. Defeat Stom at Tornel's Training Center V. Rescue Oak child, get Sword of Fire VI. Defeat Giant Insect and get Ball of Fire -Head southwest and enter the town of Brynmaer -Buy new equipment, rest up, etc. and be sure to talk to the man named Akahana standing near the entrance of town -After hearing about Akahana's lost statue, head northeast, then go south over the bridge and head west; find the entirely out of place treasure chest to obtain the Onyx Statue -Bring the statue back to Akahana and receive the Gas Mask in return -Head north of the bridge into near the Onyx Statue to find Tornel's training house -Defeat Stom by jabbing as fast as possible; leveling up makes beating him easier. Tornel will give you Telepathy magic in return -Journey west of where you found the Onyx Statue and enter the Poisonous Swamp, making sure you have the Gas Mask equipped -Go to Oak (map) and talk to some townspeople, including the woman in SW building, whose child is missing -Find the missing child (map) and return him to the parent to receive Insect Flute. Talk to the Oak elder to receive the Sword of Fire. Also talk to the townspeople to learn about the evilness of prejudice -Go to the edge of the Giant Insect area and use the Insect Flute; use Level 1 attacks with the Sword of Fire in between the Insect's spitting things to kill him. The Sword of Wind works, but not as effectively. He takes roughly 10 level 1 Fire attacks to defeat -Beathing the Giant Insect will give you 75 exp. and The Ball of Fire -Talk to the Oak people and Stom again Poisonous Swamp Map |Oak| | | _______________| | | Giant Insect | | | |______ ______| |______________ | | | | | ______________| | _______________| | | | | | |_____________ | |______ _____ | | | | | | | | | _______| |____| |__________________| | | | |______ ____ ____ ______________| | | | | | | ________________| |____| |____| |_______________ ent. | ________ ____ ____________ _______________| | | | | | | | |____| | _____| | | | |kid | |__________| |________| ====================Area 3: Mt. Sabre Outline: I. Enter Mt. Sabre SW II. Find Tornado Bracelet, see Tornel III. Go to Mt. Sabre N IV. Rescue Leaf people, defeat General Kelbesque -Make a pit stop at Brynmaer, then head southwest towards the Mt. Sabre, and notice the really quick change from nice grass to frost. I'll cleverly refer to this area as Mt. Sabre SW -Make your way to Cave 4 and get the Tornado Bracelet (it's usually better not to have Bracelets selected so you don't waste MP) -Make sure ot pick up the Warp Boots and Medical Herb and then make your way to Tornel. He will give you Teleport magic and tell you to return to Leaf. Before going to Leaf, I recommend going down the big ice slide that goes under the bridge because it's pretty fun -Map notes: Ic = Ice Wall, The long slopes with \\ are the Ice Slides, numbers correspond to caves on the frozen outer part, letters for the inner green parts Mt. You'll get the Flame Bracelet and 150 exp. for killing him. As with the Vampire, have a charged level 2 Fire shot aimed at him when he starts talking; release the attack button and you'll get a quick shot on him right after he ends his dialogue -Use the Prison Key and proceed through the gate and talk to the Leaf elder Tamalic. Go to Portoa II. Waterfall Cave (Sword of Water) III. South Lake (Ball of Water) IV. Amazones V. Kirisa Plant Cave VI. Fog Lamp Cave VII. Portoa/Sea -In Portoa, buy new items/armor if you wish then head to the large castle in the northwest part of town -Walk into the castle, but DO NOT step forward, use Paralysis on the guard to the Queen's (center) room. Proceed into the Queen's room and speak to her. Then speak to the Fortune Teller in the NE part of Portoa. Then head back to the Queen's room, again Paralyzing the guard on the way. After the Queen runs out the back door, go to the SE wall and Paralyze the door guard. Follow the Queen through this NE door and enter the back door to the Fortune Teller's room. The Queen will reveal herself as Asina and give you the Flute of Lime and instruct you to head to the Waterall Cave -Leave Portoa and head northwest to the Waterfall Cave (map), cleverly placed behind the waterfall -In the Waterfall Cave, use the Asina's Flute of Lime to cure the two stoned people (the real Queen and her maiden). It's not mandatory, but you should definitely un-petrify Akahana, with an additonal Flute of Lime in a treasure chest, to get the Shield Ring; you should also equip it immediately unless you like hopping with Rabbit Boots -The primary purpose of the cave is to obtain the Sword of Water -The Mimics are great gold and experience sources but I do not know a way to wake them without being hit Waterfall Cave Map Note: Mimics are the treasure chests that attack and follow you __ __ |A | |B | ____________________ _______|__| _______|__| MIMIC |Tr |R| | | **| **Queen | | | ____|k|_______ | | _______| of Portoa | _______| | | | | |__| | | |__| | | |Rk| _______| | |Rk| ________| |__|__| | Tr | MIMIC |__| | | |__________| | |_____| _____ _____| |A | | | | | |__| |___________| | |_____ | | |_____ | | | |ent| _________ MIMIC |Tr|S |Tr| MIMIC __ | |t | |__________ *Akahana |* | | |r | |R| Tr | Sword of Water (Shield Ring) | | | |e | _|k|______| _______| |____| |a | | | |m | | ______________ | ____________ |~ | | | | | | | |~ | |___| __________| |__| Flute | |~ | | |D | |C | of Lime |Tr|~ | _______| |__| |__| |__|___|__| __ __ |C | |D | ___|__|___ ___|__|___ | | | | | |________ _________| | | | | | |___________ | | ___________| | |________| | | | |_______ ________| | | | | |________| |B | |__| ------------------------------------------------------------------ -Following Asina's advice, head SW of Portoa to enter a small new area. Asina will appear and give you Recover magic, one of the most useful (and expensive) spells -Making sure you have a Medical Herb, make an Ice Bridge and go a bit W and speak to the green thing -Use a Medical Herb on the dolphin and receive the Shell Flute in return; this will come in handy later -Teleport to Brynmaer -Head east, make an Ice Bridge, then head south into Amazones -Buy stuff if you can afford it, then making sure you don't go into the western part of town, cast Paralysis on the guard outside the western house before she covers the door (if she does exit and re-enter the town), then enter the house, before talking to the Chief in the chair, head down the stairs behind her throne and open the chest to get the Blizzard Bracelet -Return to Portoa -Head south for a while, then create an ice bridge on the western river -Enter the cave to the west -Find the Kirisa Plant in the green field area; you'll see a treasure chest in the NE corner of the area. The two Vampires are idenical; they are a bit more difficult than the one you faced in the Sealed Cave because they move around much faster. If you have decent armor, however, their blue bats will not harm you at all, which is quite helpful. I recommend using charged shots of any sword rather than jabbing the Vampires; if you try to jab you're much more liable to make contact with the Vampire and lose a lot of HP. Be patient with level 2 shots and you shouldnt't have much trouble -To get the Fruit of Power equip the Rabbit Boots and hop through the spikes; you can get through without losing any HP -When you encounter the Fake Girl attack her repeatedly and Sabera will reveal herself -The Sword of Fire is the superior weapon when fighting Sabera, I recommend using level 2 attacks; you can defeat her in only 3-5 good level 2 shots. Again Kensu will reveal himself and this time he will give you Change magic and instruct you to go to Shyron in Mt. Hydra -Before heading towards Goa and Shyron a small diversion... Teleport to Amazones and become a woman (using Change). Go to Aryllis in the east part of town and give her the Kirisa Plant and receive the Bow of Moon in return -Use Change to take the form of a Dragonian soldier (Wonder Twin powers can also be used) and go to the west side of Swan to the guarded gate -You should be able to pass through the gate now with no problem. Tips -YOU MUST EQUIP WEAPONS AND ARMOR IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE EFFECTIVE -In towns, talk to everyone -Don't have any magic selected other than Refresh, otherwise you might easily waste some MP by an accidental button tap; same goes with tool items -Recover magic is costly, therefore always try to avoid status ailments; for instance if a monster poisons you on contact it's wise to lay back and kill him with projectile attacks rather than stabbing him -The best armor or shield isn't necessarily the one with the highest defense; status protection often comes in handy -Sell old and worthless armor/shields at Pawn Shops -Immediate armor/shield purchase at every new town isn't always wise as there may be a town with better or cheaper products coming up -Watch out when walking under bridges, sometimes there are monsters you can't see -Always have at least 20MP available to use Teleport for emergency use =============================Section IV. Wild Warp Code There is one non-Game Genie style code for Crystalis... This was probably taken from the "Classified Information" section of an ancient issue of Nintendo Power. This is called the Wild Warp Code How: At any point in the game, press and hold A and B on Controller 1, then press A on Controller 2; this will warp you to somewhere else in the game; this warp can be repeated as often as desired. The warp proceeds sequentially; the first time you warp, you go to #1, then #2, and so forth. The Warp is quick way to get around if you know where you're going and can serve as a free Teleport. 1. Town of Leaf 2. Valley of Wind 3. Sealed Cave (inside) 4. Sealed Cave Exit, North of Brynmaer 5. Poisonous Swamp 6. Mt. Sabre West, South of Brynmaer 7. Exit of Mt. Sabre North, North of Portoa 8.
